Fête des Vendanges de Montmartre, Paris 2009

The Fête des Vendanges de Montmartre, Paris is certainly one of my favourite salon du vin of the year.

Click on the official video and join Monsieur Daniel Vaillant, the Mayor of Paris 18e arrondissement, and experience the weekends events.

Keep an eye out for Géralds staring role, 1 minute into the video, talking about the Saumur rouge !!

Here's Gérald sharing un verre with Montmartres Oenologue.

See you there in October 2010.

Helen & Steves Weekend Wine Discovery

Last Friday we welcomed Helen & Steve back to 'La Bellevue' for their exclusive Weekend Wine Discovery - a weekend dedicated to Val de Loire wines and traditional French home cooked cuisine.

The evening started with the customary pre-dinner aperitif, and was shortly followed by a 'Beaumont household' custom...

...une petite dégustation to experience the difference between les primeurs - Beaujolais Nouveau and Touraine Primeur.

Spending most of their weekend with a wine glass in their hands Helen & Steve had an impressive 17 different AOC appellations to sample throughout their day.

No time was lost heading off to the first vineyard where a Chinon blanc was tasted - only 2% of the wine produced under the appellation AOC Chinon is blanc, a rare find as Chinon is traditionally known for its fruity reds.

The mornings wine tasting concluded, at this next particular dégustation Helen was a little more reserved but Steve embraced his 'French experience' and tucked into a plate of oysters.

In keeping with French tradition a pre-lunch aperitif is taken at the bar of our friends lovely cave â vin/bar à vin where conversation is freely shared with fellow lunchers....aaahhhh la France !

To avoid any temptation of la sieste a visit to the vines for 'a breath of fresh air' and a look at the surrounding countryside was opted for before the afternoon dégustations got underway.

Fortunate enough to experience une porte ouverte at one of the Domaines it was time all too soon to return to 'La Bellevue' for the evenings aperitif and a home cooked dinner.

"Just FANTASTIC, such a great experience ! Very friendly vineyards. A great selection of wines and extremely interesting to sample the difference between the different appellations. The Weekend Wine Discovery was everything we were looking forward to.

"Sarah-Jane & Gérald have been fantastic and looked after us as part of the family. We will be encouraging our friends to come along next time." Helen & Steve, Warwick

Grape Harvest 2009 - Last but not Least !!

With next week seeing the end of Harvest 2009 at the Domaine it was the turn of the chenin grapes to be picked for the exquisite Côteaux de Saumur - a white wine and delicious accompaniment with foie gras or blue cheese.

'The GP Team' !! Not quite recreating the romantic image of grape picking we like to imagine - but fortunately for them this autumn has been fabulous with glorious sunshine throughout the day.

The tractor and trailer used to take the picked grapes back to the Domaine.

With autumn taking a tighter grip daily the colours in the vines have been a picture.

Photos - 2009 Fêtes des Vendanges, Paris

Ready for the weekends event.

The weekends rain didn't dampen the festive atmosphere.

Marching along the cobbled streets of Montmartre bands played throughout the day.

Gérald sharing un verre with Montmartres Oenologue.

Qu'est-ce que c'est ?

A London taxi in Paris ?

Félicitations to Gisella & Sander

Félicitations et congratulations to Gisella & Sander on their forthcoming wedding from la famille Beaumont.

Having driven from Rotterdam for their annual visit to the Fêtes des Vendanges Gisella & Sander stopped by 'La Paleine' to acquaint themselves with the latest vintages.

Sander you are 'Brad Pitt' !!

Fêtes des Vendanges, Montmartre - 2009

Making their annual visit to the Fête des Vendanges, Montmartre and taking a momentary break from writing her 3rd cookery book, to enjoy the festivities, were our dear friends Jennifer & Harald.

Jennifer (McLagan) is the author of the much publicized and controversial cookbook 'Fat - An Appreciation of a Misunderstood Ingredient'.

Last weekend Montmartre, Paris hosted its 76th Fête des Vendanges which drew an estimated 350,000 visitors.

See you in 2010 !

Wine & Gastronomie and Vineyard Visits

An intended 'escape' from it all was the plan...

A glorious September welcomed Sarah & Simon to 'La Bellevue' and it didn't take long before their fervent passion for wine and gastronomie became an aventure of refinement.

How could two Wine & Foodie Experts come to the Val de Loire and expect to 'escape' from it all ?? C'est impossible !!

Gérald, sharing Simon & Sarah's zeal and appreciation of wine arranged a day, specifically tailored for their tastes, visiting vineyards.

Introducing them to his personal friends, vignerons with whom it would be impossible to meet without a French connection and personal introduction.

The AOC appellations of:

Saviennières, Chaume, Bonnezeaux, Crémant de Loire, Rosé de Loire, Anjou Village and Anjou were sampled.

And needless to say after much déguster a lengthy French lunch was in order.

Bravo les anglais for ordering a traditional French delicacy, an andouillette - you have put me to shame !

Fête des Vendanges, Montmartre Paris

Since 1934 Montmartre has played host to the colourful 'Fête des Vendanges' and will do so again from 8th-11th October 2009.

Lining the cobbled streets and set at the feet of the Sacré Coeur exhibitions, artisan & vignerons stands, from every department in France, will entice.

Following recent years an estimated 350,000 visitors are expected to participate in the joyous celebration - the 'first cut' of Montmartes vines.

Certainly one of the most colourful wine related calendar events of the year and most definitely one of our favourites to attend.

Gérald will be there representing Domaine de la Paleine.

Don't be shy, stop for une dégustation , wine tasting, a chat with Gérald and soak up the fabulous festive spirit.

A très bientôt !

Grape-Picking - Harvest starts - AOC Saumur

Poised and ready for action !

Yesterday saw the start of Harvest 2009 and the first grapes to be picked were the chardonnay for the Crémant de Loire and blanc Saumur Brut sparkling wines.

Clean and awaiting the first trailer load of grapes.

The Press and conveyor belt which transports the grapes into the Press.

The first tractor trailer load arrives.

My photos aren't the sort to conjure up the romantic image of harvesting grapes in France we all imagine.

Instead they show more of the 'behind the scenes' work involved during harvest, other than seeing pickers amongst the vines.

Here the chardonnay is being emptied on to the conveyor belt ready for pressing.

From this two different juices will be extracted to produce the Domaines wines.

And 2009 looks to be a very interesting vintage as the good quality grapes and good volumes are proving.

6eme Les Foulées du Saumur-Champigny

Varrains (49) hosted its 6th Les Foulées du Saumur-Champigny, a race course of 6kms or 17kms set amongst the vineyards of the AOC Saumur-Champigny.

Competing in the race was an impressive 2,500 runners, both seriously and for fun and as fun-runners past I couldn't help but get caught up in the festive spirit - a smile never left my face.

It was Augustins & my first les foulées and certainly not our last, the atmosphere was wonderful and an extremely well organised event for all to participate in and enjoy.

We were there to cheer our dear friend Hélène along as she had opted for the 17kms run...

...and by half-way she was still looking remarkably fresh !

Allez Hélène !!!

Not all about the race, a huge fête for spectators and runners to enjoy afterwards included playground rides for the children, artisans cuisine and of course, les dégustations of the AOC Saumur-Champigny wines.

5ème Marché des Vins de Saumur

On Sunday 6th September Saumur hosted its 5th Wine Festival - Marché des Vins de Saumur.

In glorious sunshine and set along the edge of the Loire river visitors sampled wines from 60 vigerons from the AOC Saumur and local artisans cuisine whilst enjoying live music and the festive atmosphere.

No stranger to Saumurs' festival Gérald was there presenting the Domaine.

And not to miss out on his 2nd Marché des Vins de Saumur, Augustin went along to help Papa...

...well, to bring Papa his lunch, to meet friends and annual returning holiday makers who make the Saumur Wine Festival part of their holiday - who can blame them, it's a fabulous event !!

A Week in the Loire Valley with Ros & Peter

All the way from Perth, Australia Gérald & I welcomed Ros & Peter to 'La Bellevue' whilst on their Loire Valley leg of their own 'Tour de France'.

Clearly after our own hearts, Ros & Peter embraced 'la France' - this was going to be a great week !

A full days bike riding and exploring...

...warranted the evenings aperitif !

A morning spent at a bustling local market was followed...

...by an afternoon at the Domaine for a Private Wine Tour & Wine Tasting with Gérald.

Château visits and more bike riding where Ros & Peter covered some phenomenal distances continued...

And as all good things come to an end, Ros & Peter's final day in the Loire fell on Saumur's 5th Wine Festival - Marché des Vins de Saumur - perfect timing !

By now fully adept to the art of dégustation they enjoyed sampling wines from the 60 presenting vignerons, naturally spending more time with Gérald at his stand.

"Everything was PERFECT. Our stay with Sarah-Jane & Gérald was an absolute highlight. Their warmth, generosity & friendship provided us with a more complete French experience in this beautiful wine region. Gérald educated us in the art of wine making and his dégustation at La Paleine was an occassion to remember. The wines were superb, Annie's House was spotless & well appointed, set in the serene setting of Pouançay. We will return!"

A Weekend Wine Tour in the Loire Valley

High interest in our private 'Visit a Vineyard' wine tour prompted Gérald and I to create an unparalleled opportunity for the serious wine enthusiast and a unique insight into wine from the Val de Loire.

Combining Géralds knowledge and wine making background we have spent much time meeting Géralds vigneron colleagues to establish a private wine tour & wine tasting 'truely French' and include some of the more select vineyards of the Loire Valley.

Today we are delighted to introduce our all inclusive 'Weekend Wine Discovery', much more than a 'wine tour', available throughout the year and the day itself can be combined with a longer stay at the cottage.

A bientôt,
Sarah-Jane & Gérald

Montreuil-Bellay Brocante

The first Sunday of every month Montreuil-Bellay hosts its monthly Brocante (flea-market).

The heart of this small town comes alive as locals, tourists and bargin hunters mill around stalls full of curiosities.

With a little patience, perserverance and bartering a French treasure or two can be found to take home to remind you of your time in the Loire Valley.

One of our favourite brocantes to visit Montreuil-Bellay is dominated by a impressive fairy-tale château....

....which can be visited after a busy morning of mooching around the brocante and a picnic lunch along the river edge at the feet of the château.
